Job Posting: Full Time, Farm Education Manager
                                                           

Position Description: The Education Manager will lead the teaching staff and education team while partnering with our Farm Manager to increase accessibility and utilization of our farm for educational programs.

Major Areas of Responsibility - The Education Manager will have responsibilities that include, but not limited to:

  • Managing the education program, and serving as lead teacher.

  • Work with Farm Manager to develop, maintain and enhance farm for educational use.

  • Curriculum planning, development and evaluation.

  • Foster and develop positive relationships with visiting schools, teachers and staff.

  • Support program marketing through outreach, evaluation and follow up.  

Primary Objectives:

  • Establish and supervise exemplary education and community programs.

  • Create environment that supports hands on learning for students who visit the farm.

  • Help raise awareness about programs through social media, communication with  programs and other means.

Specific Responsibilities of the Job

  • Teach classes and lead teachers

  • Select and supervise part-time teachers and birthday party program staff,

  • Train new teachers and provide professional development for all teachers.

  • Observe and evaluate teachers twice a year aligned with mutually agreed upon goals.   

  • Assure that programs are appropriately staffed and have appropriate materials and supplies.

  • Collect photographs and other artifacts that visually communicate the impact of the education program, with proper releases when needed.

  • Coordinate farm chores included in educational programs with the Farm Manager.

    • Assure fields and gardens are designed/maintained for planned children’s programs.

    • Assure animal barn and animal care areas, and beehives meet safety guidelines and are accessible for educational activities.

    • Work to improve passive learning opportunities with signage and materials.

  • Curriculum planning, development, administration, and evaluation

    • Schedule programs, in coordination with the Office Manager

    • Manage and update lesson plans.

    • Participate in grant writing to support programs as needed.

    • Prepare or supervise preparation of program reports for grant-funded programs.

  • Collaborate with 4-H Extension Educator to assure program meets 4-H goals.

  • Create and maintain positive relationships with visiting teachers and staff.

    • Participate in program planning and reviews.

    • Provide follow up materials.

    • Collect and report on visiting teacher program evaluations.

    • Use social media, website, and mailings to communicate with teachers.

  • Assist with general management and organization of the 4-H Education Center at Auerfarm under the direction of the Executive Director.

    • Engage in organizational planning and development as a senior administrator.  

    • Help with Auerfarm events and special programs.

    • Represent the education program or Auerfarm, as invited, to the Board of Directors or external organizations.

Job Requirements

  • Broad knowledge and experience in: farm-based education, science education; early childhood education; outdoor education; multicultural education.

  • Demonstrated ability to: develop and implement hands-on curriculum for an outdoor setting that meets national and state STEM standards

  • General knowledge of: environmental science, nature, agriculture, farming, animal care.

  • Experience in: organization, communication, multitasking and customer service

Education and Experience: Bachelor’s Degree, Master's Preferred. Teacher certification or relevant professional experience.

Work Environment: Work is performed in a business office setting, as well as a farm setting, subject to some interruptions and background noise.  Work is performed with independence and initiative, referring unusual problems to the immediate supervisor.  Work may be performed in a variety of weather conditions with exposure to varying weather conditions and/or temperature extremes.  Must be able to perform such tasks as writing, filing, typing, using a calculator. Must be able to sit or stand for prolonged periods.  Has frequent contact with employees, vendors, community representatives, and the general public.  Work may occasionally be required beyond normal working hours. While performing the duties of this job, the employee is occasionally exposed to moving mechanical parts and vehicles. Employees must be comfortable working outside in all weather.
