Chickens and Eggs

Meet one of our friendly hens and learn about her lifecyle from egg to adult. Students will learn about the parts of a chicken and its basic needs. They will discover how a chick develops inside the egg and how it hatches. Older students will focus on adaptations and food webs and can be introduced to the genetics of egg shell color.
Program length: 30 - 60 minutes.

Animal Tracking

Learn to identify common Connecticut animal tracks, where to look for them and how to read the stories they tell. Students will learn to recognize animal footprints and create their own tracking field guide for later use.

Food Group Smoothies

Learn about the five food groups and how to eat a balanced diet with the MyPlate nutrition guide. Students will make a smoothie from fruits and vegetables and taste how delicious a healthy snack can be.
Program length: 30 - 60 minutes.
Cost: $150 per hour / $75 per half hour up to 20 children.

Feathers and Fur

Meet two animals from Auerfarm's barn! An Auerfarm teacher will bring a chicken and a rabbit and encourage students to compare and contrast the two animals. Younger students will focus on body coverings and animal homes, while older students will talk about adaptations and build food webs with the barn animals' wild counterparts.
Program length: 30-60 minutes.
Cost: $75 per half hour $150 per hour up to 20 children.

From Sheep to Yarn

Discover how sheep's wool is turned into yarn. In this program, students will learn about the parts of a sheep, what they need to live and how we turn their wool into clothing. Students will make their own bracelet by washing, drying, carding and spinning wool.
Program length: 30 - 60 minutes.
Cost: $75 per half houri $150 per hour up to 20 children.

Food Miles

Let's find out where our food comes from! In this program, students will calculate how far their lunch traveled to their plate. They will compare the miles traveled by a national and local menu and discuss the energy used in transportation. Once the calculations are done, students will feel how far each meal traveled by doing jumping jacks.
Program length: 30 minutes.
Cost: $75 up to 20 children. 

Old Fashioned Ice Cream

Have you ever wanted to know how they made ice cream before electricity? In this program, students will make and taste old fashioned hand cranked vanilla ice cream. After mixing all of the ingredients and talking about their origins, everyone will get a turn to help crank the ice cream. Once frozen, they will taste their efforts. This program is a lot of fun and perfect for an after school program, daycare or classroom celebration.
Program length: 60 minutes.
Cost: $150 per hour up to 30 children.

Garden in the Classroom

Let's bring the wonders of gardening into your classroom. In this program, students will examine and sort a variety of seeds, learn about the parts of a plant and act out a plant's life cycle. Each student will plant a seed and learn how to care for your class' new window sill garden.
Program length: 30-60 minutes.

Worms and Composting

Let's explore decomposition together! Students will examine our red wiggler worms and learn about how they turn garbage into soil. Younger students will practice their observation skills while the older students will focus on adaptations and compost ecosystems.
Program length: 30-60 minutes.
